Ambush

Ambush is a genre-defining fixed-screen arcade shooter first released by Gremlin Industries in 1977, standing as one of the most influential early titles that shaped the shoot 'em up category for decades to come. Set against a fictional World War II Pacific theater backdrop, the game places players in control of a stationary anti-aircraft gun emplacement positioned at the bottom of the screen, tasked with fending off endless waves of incoming enemy fighter jets, fast-moving dive bombers, and heavily armored heavy bomber formations that drop lethal explosive payloads if left unchallenged. Ahead of its time for late 1970s arcade design, Ambush introduced several innovative features that became standard for later shooter titles, including a score multiplier system for consecutive kills, procedurally adjusted enemy flight paths that increased in difficulty as players progressed, and even subtle haptic feedback on original arcade cabinets that shook the control stick when players landed hit

Game Guide

Mastering Ambush requires a mix of quick reflexes, strategic target prioritization, and familiarity with the game’s hidden mechanics to hit high scores and survive for dozens of waves. First and foremost, always prioritize fast-moving dive bombers before targeting standard fighter formations: dive bombers spawn at the top center of the screen and move twice as fast as regular units, and will instantly destroy your emplacement with a direct bomb hit if they reach the lower third of the screen. Scanning the top of the screen for dive bomber spawns the second a new wave begins will cut your death rate by over 60% in early levels. Next, take full advantage of Ambush’s score multiplier system: landing 3 consecutive hits on the same type of enemy unit boosts your point gain by 3x, while 5 consecutive hits unlock a 10x multiplier that remains active until you miss a shot. To maximize multipliers, avoid firing randomly at scattered targets, and instead focus on wiping out full formations of the same enemy type one at a time. When you unlock the bonus level after every 3 standard waves, remember that enemy units cannot fire back during this phase, so you can afford to take riskier shots for maximum points. Rather than aiming at individual units, fire ahead of moving enemy formations so your shells arrive just as the group passes the targeted spot, letting you take out 3 to 4 units with a single shot for up to 20,000 bonus points, enough to unlock your first extra life at the 25,000 point threshold. For the heavy bomber units that spawn every 5 waves, avoid wasting shots firing directly at their moving hull: instead, wait for them to reach the edge of the screen and turn around, as they pause for half a second during direction changes, giving you a perfect window to land 4 to 5 consecutive hits. You only need 10 total hits to take down a heavy bomber, and doing so rewards you with 5,000 points and a 20-second double fire buff that cuts your shot cooldown in half.
