Alpha Mission II ASO II - Last Guardian (NGM-007)(NGH-007)

Released in 1991 by SNK as the official sequel to the 1985 classic Alpha Mission, Alpha Mission II (officially titled ASO II: Last Guardian, with the arcade catalog numbers NGM-007 and NGH-007 for Neo Geo MVS and home AES systems respectively) is a beloved vertical scrolling arcade shooter. Set in a distant future where the hostile Gurzel Empire has launched a full-scale invasion of Earth’s outer defense networks, you take control of the advanced ASO fighter craft to fight through 7 hand-crafted, progressively challenging levels, from desolate alien-infested wastelands to orbital fortress strongholds. What set Alpha Mission II apart from other shooters of its era is its dual weapon system: a dedicated air-to-air arsenal to take down enemy fighter squadrons, drones, and flying bosses, and a separate air-to-ground weapon system to destroy armored turrets, ground tanks, and fortified surface emplacements. The game also features a deep upgrade system, with collectible power-ups that boost

Game Guide

Mastering Alpha Mission II starts with getting comfortable with its core dual weapon mechanics first. Use your air-to-air weapon (mapped to the A button by default) for all flying enemy units, and switch to your air-to-ground weapon (B button) exclusively for surface targets, as cross-use of weapons will deal greatly reduced damage. Prioritize collectible power-ups in this order for the best chance of survival: first, grab Armor (A) tokens whenever they appear, as each adds a stack of defensive health that lets you take 2 extra hits before your ship is destroyed. Next, collect Power (P) tokens to level up your air-to-air weapon: at level 3, it unlocks a wide spread shot that covers 70% of the screen, making it far easier to clear swarms of enemy fighters. After that, collect Ground (G) tokens to upgrade your air-to-ground weapon to tracking missiles, which automatically lock onto all visible surface targets so you don’t have to aim manually. Limit your Speed (S) token collection to 2 total: any more will make your ship overly responsive, leading to accidental collisions with slow-moving enemy projectiles. For boss fights, spend the first 10 seconds of each encounter only dodging, as every boss opens with a dense spread of projectiles that is nearly impossible to dodge while firing. Once the opening barrage ends, focus all fire on the boss’s exposed weak point (usually a glowing core or cannon barrel, visible only when it is preparing to fire). Don’t hoard your special bombs (activated with the C button): use them immediately if you are surrounded by projectiles, as each bomb clears all on-screen enemy fire and deals massive damage to all active enemies. Keep an eye out for glowing gold crates on the ground across every level: destroying these drops rare 1UP extra lives or temporary max-level weapon boosts that can carry you through tough later sections.
