Alien Syndrome (set 1, Japan, old, System 16A, FD1089A 317-0033)

Alien Syndrome (set 1, Japan, old, System 16A, FD1089A 317-0033) is a legendary 1987 run-and-gun arcade title developed and published by Sega for its iconic System 16A arcade hardware, one of the earliest Japanese regional revisions of the game that uses the FD1089A 317-0033 security chip for copy protection. Set in a gritty sci-fi universe, the game puts players in control of either protagonist Ricky or Mary, two space soldiers dispatched to infiltrate overrun space stations to rescue trapped crew members before an unavoidable self-destruct sequence detonates each facility. Each level is filled with hordes of grotesque alien creatures ranging from fast-moving facehugger-style parasites to large, armored alien brutes, with a massive unique boss waiting at the end of every station. The game supported two-player local co-op from launch, making it a staple of 1980s arcade halls where friends could team up to take on the game’s famously high difficulty curve. Game Guide

Mastering this Japanese set 1 revision of Alien Syndrome requires a mix of map knowledge, quick reflexes, and smart resource management, starting with learning its core control scheme first: use the 8-way joystick for free movement across each station’s corridors, the primary fire button to shoot your equipped weapon, and the secondary button to throw powerful explosive charges. First and foremost, prioritize rescuing hostages as soon as you spot them on your on-screen minimap: every 5 hostages you rescue unlocks a permanent weapon upgrade for your current run, ranging from faster fire rates and wide spread shots to piercing laser blasts that make short work of armored enemies. Never stand still for more than a second, as this Japanese revision spawns enemies slightly faster than global versions: aliens can emerge from floor vents, off-screen corridors, and ceiling hatches from all directions, so stick to open areas when possible and move in small circular patterns to avoid being cornered in narrow passageways. Save your explosive charges for large swarms of enemies or mini-boss encounters only: you start with 3 charges per life, and refills are rare, only found in hidden crates scattered near hostage spawn points. Keep a close eye on the self-destruct timer in the top corner of the screen: you have exactly 120 seconds to rescue all required hostages and reach the exit teleporter in each level, and failing to make it in time will result in an instant life loss regardless of your remaining health. For boss fights, target each boss’s exposed weak point to end encounters fast: the first level’s giant slug boss is vulnerable only when it opens its mouth to spit acid, while the second level’s floating alien brain has a glowing core on its underside that takes 3x damage. If you play in two-player co-op mode, split up to cover different areas of the map to rescue hostages faster, but stay within two screens of each other to provide backup if one player gets overwhelmed by
