Alien Challenge (China)

Released in 1994 by Taiwan-based game developer International Games System (IGS) for arcade platforms, Alien Challenge (China) is a fast-paced, over-the-top side-scrolling beat ‘em up that gained a cult following across regional Chinese arcades throughout the 1990s. Built for 1-2 simultaneous players, the game drops you into a near-future 2020 setting where a hostile alien invasion has overrun major Chinese cities, leaving civilian populations trapped and local defense forces overwhelmed. You can choose from four distinct playable characters: a Shaolin martial arts master, a cybernetically enhanced special forces soldier, a quick-witted street fighter, and a tech-savvy engineer, each with unique combo moves, special abilities, and finishing attacks that cater to different playstyles. Unlike many Western arcade beat ‘em ups of the era, Alien Challenge (China) weaves in distinct regional cultural references, from enemy designs inspired by Chinese folklore creatures twisted by alien mutat

Game Guide

First, familiarize yourself with the core three-button control scheme: attack, jump, and special ability. Your standard attack string can be chained into 3-5 hit combos depending on your character, and pressing jump + attack at the same time triggers a sweeping area-of-effect attack that knocks back all enemies within a 3-foot radius, perfect for when you are surrounded by swarms of alien grunts. Your special ability deals massive damage but drains 10% of your health, so only use it when you are facing a large group of strong enemies or a mid-boss to avoid wasting health unnecessarily. For character selection, if you are a new player, pick the Shaolin martial artist first: he has the most balanced stats across attack power, speed, and health, and his combos are the easiest to chain without precise timing. The special forces soldier has the highest attack power but slower movement speed, making him ideal for players who prefer high-damage play and are comfortable dodging enemy attacks. The street fighter has the fastest movement speed but lower health, great for speedrunners or players who prefer hit-and-run tactics, while the engineer’s special ability summons a temporary turret that deals passive damage, perfect for co-op play where you can support your partner. When progressing through levels, always prioritize defeating ranged alien attackers first: they fire slow but high-damage plasma bolts from off-screen that can catch you off guard if you are focused on melee enemies. For boss fights, first learn their attack patterns: every boss has 3-4 distinct attacks that they cycle through in a fixed order, so spend the first 30 seconds of the fight dodging without attacking to memorize their sequence. When the boss pauses briefly between attack cycles, that is your window to land a full combo before retreating. Collect every health pickup and power-up you find: the golden dragon power-up grants you 10 seconds of invincibility, which is the best tool for taking off half
