Alcon (US)

Alcon (US) is a beloved vertically scrolling shoot 'em up arcade game developed and published by Taito in 1986, originally released in Japan under the title *Slap Fight* before being rebranded as Alcon for North American arcade cabinets. Set in a distant sci-fi future, the game puts players in control of an advanced starfighter tasked with repelling the invading Alcon alien race, which has seized control of multiple human interstellar colonies. Unlike many shoot 'em ups of its era that relied on fixed weapon loadouts, Alcon stands out for its flexible, player-driven upgrade system: collecting scattered "P" power-ups across levels lets you unlock and upgrade 7 distinct weapon types, including long-range precision lasers, wide spread shots for crowd control, homing missiles that track off-screen enemies, and temporary energy shields that absorb incoming damage. The game features 8 unique levels, each with distinct environmental hazards from floating asteroid fields to fortified alien gro

Game Guide

Start your Alcon run by mastering basic movement first: your starfighter moves slower than most 1980s shoot 'em up craft, so small, gentle joystick adjustments are all you need to dodge incoming fire, rather than sharp, jerky movements. Prioritize your first three power-up drops in order: first, upgrade your base shot to dual fire, then unlock spread shot to clear swarms of small enemy craft easily, then unlock homing missiles to take out off-screen targets without diverting your aim. Avoid chasing power-ups that spawn in the middle of dense enemy barrages: losing a life will reset all your weapon upgrades, so staying alive is always more valuable than grabbing a single power-up. Save your energy shield for boss fights exclusively: shields absorb up to 3 direct hits, which will give you enough time to target boss weak points without dodging constant barrages. For each boss, focus fire only on their marked weak points rather than wasting shots on armored hull sections: the level 1 battleship boss is only vulnerable to fire on its two front-facing energy cores, while the level 3 flying fortress weak point is the small glowing core under its central armor plating. If you want to unlock the secret nuclear weapon upgrade, collect 3 consecutive "P" power-ups at the start of level 4 without firing a single shot: this weapon will clear the entire screen of enemies and projectiles instantly, making the level 4 boss fight trivial. For high score chasers, you earn a 2x score multiplier for clearing full enemy waves without taking damage, plus an extra life every time you hit 1,000,000 points. Always stay near the bottom of the screen whenever possible, as this gives you the maximum reaction time for incoming projectiles that spawn off the top of the play area.
