Action Fighter (unprotected)

If you love high-octane 1980s arcade action that blends on-foot combat, vehicle racing, and shooter mechanics, Action Fighter (unprotected) is an essential retro title developed and published by Sega for arcades in 1986. This unprotected, DRM-free ROM version removes the original arcade cabinet’s anti-piracy encryption checks, ensuring smooth, error-free gameplay on modern retro gaming platforms without cutting any of the original’s iconic content. In Action Fighter, you take on the role of a special ops agent tasked with taking down a global terrorist network across 5 distinct stages, ranging from crowded urban highways and arid desert roads to heavily fortified military bases. The game’s biggest innovation for its era is its dynamic vehicle switching system: you start each run on a fast but fragile motorcycle, and can unlock and switch to sports cars, attack helicopters, and even heavy tanks as you progress, each with unique handling, weapon loadouts, and durability. Game Guide

Mastering Action Fighter (unprotected) relies on strategic vehicle selection, quick reflexes, and knowledge of enemy attack patterns to clear all 5 stages and top the leaderboard. First, prioritize collecting armor power-ups during your opening motorcycle runs: your default bike has only 1 health point, meaning a single collision with an enemy or obstacle will end your run, but a blue armor pickup will absorb one hit for you. Grab the shotgun power-up as soon as it spawns too, as it has three times the range of your default pistol and can take out multiple enemy bikers in one shot. When you reach the start of stage 2, always take the sports car spawn point near the highway entrance: the car has 2 health points, a built-in fully automatic machine gun, and can destroy small enemy vehicles without taking damage, though you should still avoid red circular landmines scattered across the road, as they will instantly destroy any ground vehicle. For stage 3, don’t miss the hidden attack helicopter spawn on the military base tarmac halfway through the level: the helicopter lets you skip all ground obstacles entirely, though you will need to fend off waves of enemy fighter jets, which have a weak point on their front nose – three well-placed shots to the nose will take them down faster than firing at their fuselage. For all boss fights, take 10 to 15 seconds to observe their attack loop before firing: the final stage’s heavy tank boss, for example, fires three homing missiles in a row before pausing for two seconds to expose its weak top turret. Focus all your fire on the turret during these pauses, and you will defeat it in three cycles without taking unnecessary damage. This unprotected version lets you pause the game at any time to study attack patterns, so don’t hesitate to take a break to plan your next move if you’re stuck.
