Action Fighter (System 16B, FD1089B 317-unknown)

First released in arcades worldwide in 1986 by Sega, Action Fighter (System 16B, FD1089B 317-unknown) is a genre-blending arcade title that combines top-down driving, vertical shooting, and side-scrolling aerial combat into one high-octane experience. Built for Sega’s powerful System 16B arcade hardware, this specific variant uses the FD1089B security chip to prevent unauthorised duplication, making it a rare and sought-after title for retro arcade collectors and casual players alike. Players take on the role of a lone combat operative tasked with taking down a global terrorist organization that has seized control of military bases, highways, and coastal facilities across five unique, increasingly challenging stages. What sets Action Fighter apart from other arcade shooters of its era is its dynamic vehicle switching system: start each stage on a nimble but fragile armed motorcycle, collect three matching power-up tokens to upgrade to a heavily armored sports car with missile launchers

Game Guide

Mastering Action Fighter’s dynamic vehicle upgrade system is the key to clearing all five stages and setting a record high score. Start with these core tips to avoid early game over screens: First, during the opening motorcycle segment, prioritize avoiding heavy armored vehicles and rocket turrets over trying to destroy every enemy on screen. Your motorcycle only has two hit points, so a single collision with an armored truck or direct rocket hit will send you back to the start of the current stage segment. Focus on collecting the motorcycle-shaped power-up tokens first: gather three, and you’ll automatically upgrade to the armored sports car, which has six hit points, dual machine guns, and homing missile capabilities that make short work of ground targets. When playing the sports car segment, look for helicopter tokens: three of these unlock the attack helicopter, the most versatile vehicle in the game. It can fly over all ground obstacles including roadblocks, mines, and crashed vehicles, and its dual air-to-ground and air-to-air weapons can target every enemy type without blind spots. If you collect three jet tokens, you’ll be transported to a side-scrolling aerial stage, where you should focus on shooting down incoming enemy jets first before targeting ground anti-air turrets. For boss fights, follow these specific strategies: The first stage boss, an armored battle train, has three weak points: the front-mounted cannon, the middle missile turret, and the rear engine core. Stay just ahead of the train as it moves down the track, and dodge its rocket barrages by moving left and right in short bursts instead of large swerves. The fourth stage coastal base boss has four anti-air turrets around its central core: take out the turrets first with your helicopter’s missiles, then focus fire on the core for 10 seconds to destroy it before it launches its full, unavoidable missile salvo. Don’t forget to pick up the rare star power-ups scattered across each stage: they gr
