99: The Last War (set 2)

99: The Last War (set 2) is a tight, fast-paced fixed-screen military shoot 'em up released for arcades in 1988 by Japanese developer and publisher Visco. This is the revised, more widely distributed rom set for the game, featuring small but impactful bug fixes and gameplay balancing tweaks that make it the preferred version for modern retro players. Unlike the scrolling shoot 'em ups that dominated arcades in the late 1980s, 99: The Last War condenses combat into single-screen battles that reward quick thinking and positioning over long level memorization. The core premise is straightforward: you control a lone elite commando tasked with surviving and defeating 99 consecutive waves of enemy forces, each wave growing larger and more aggressive than the last. Enemies include foot infantry, armored jeeps, attack helicopters, and stationary heavy machine gun emplacements that advance on your position from all sides of the playfield. A standout mechanic for its era is the ability to aim yo

Game Guide

99: The Last War (set 2) has a steep but fair difficulty curve, and a few key tips will help you improve your high score and survive deeper into the 99 waves. First, master the independent aiming mechanic immediately: this is the game’s biggest tactical advantage, and many new players fail by treating it like a standard run-and-gun where aim follows movement. Practice strafing left and right to dodge bullets while keeping your gun aimed at incoming helicopters or flanking infantry. Second, prioritize targets correctly: always take out mobile enemies (infantry, jeeps, helicopters) before focusing on stationary machine gun nests. Mobile units can flank you and cut off your escape routes, while stationary emplacements have predictable fire patterns that are easier to dodge long-term. Avoid staying in the center of the screen for extended periods: positioning yourself near one edge of the playfield limits the number of directions enemies can attack from, reducing the amount of fire you need to dodge at any given time. Ammunition is limited, so don’t spam shots: every missed shot wastes ammo, and you can only restock by collecting ammo drops from defeated enemies. Don’t risk crossing heavy enemy fire just to grab ammo if you’re already well-stocked. After wave 30, helicopters become a constant major threat, so always keep half your attention on the upper half of the screen to take them out as soon as they spawn. Remember that set 2 has adjusted enemy spawn rates compared to the original set 1 rom, so don’t rely on old spawn patterns from the first release if you’ve played that version before. Use the short cooldown between waves to reposition to a safe spot, and you’ll be surprised how many more waves you can clear.
