88 Games

Released in 1988 by legendary Japanese game publisher Konami, 88 Games is a beloved Olympic-themed arcade sports compilation created to tie into the 1988 Summer Olympic Games held in Seoul, South Korea. Serving as a follow-up to Konami’s popular earlier Hyper Olympic series, 88 Games packs 8 distinct, fast-paced sporting events into a single arcade cabinet, designed for competitive head-to-head fun that drew crowds to arcades across North America, Europe, and Asia throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. The full lineup of events includes 100m sprint, 110m hurdles, long jump, archery, weightlifting, high jump, skeet shooting, and marathon, each with unique mechanics that test different player skills. Unlike more modern complex sports games, 88 Games leans into the classic arcade “button mashing” formula that defined Konami’s early sports titles: players tap direction and action buttons rapidly to build speed for running events, power for strength events, and steady their aim for shoo

Game Guide

Mastering 88 Games relies on learning specific mechanics for each event, since every challenge tests a different skill set. Start by customizing your controls when playing on PLAYERETRO: map your action buttons to two separate, easily accessible keys on your keyboard to make rapid tapping far more comfortable than trying to tap one key repeatedly. For all running-based events (100m sprint, 110m hurdles, long jump, marathon), the biggest mistake new players make is tapping too fast too early, which drains your stamina and causes your runner to slow down unexpectedly. Instead, maintain a steady, consistent tapping speed of 4-5 taps per second to keep your speed maxed out without draining stamina early in your run. For 110m hurdles, time your jump button press one step before you reach the hurdle to clear it cleanly — jumping early or late will cost you critical seconds that can cost you the gold. For long jump, hit the jump button right as your runner’s foot hits the takeoff board to get maximum distance, and avoid jumping early to prevent costly fouls. For strength events like weightlifting, build power slowly in the first phase by tapping at a steady rhythm, then increase your tapping speed once the bar passes your hips to lock in a successful lift. For precision events like archery and skeet shooting, always account for wind: in archery, shift your aim slightly into the direction of the wind to counteract arrow drift, and wait for your aim to stabilize before releasing your shot. In skeet shooting, aim slightly ahead of the moving skeet to account for the slight lag between your shot press and the bullet firing, this will help you hit far more targets. For marathon, save your stamina for the last 2 miles: start at a moderate pace, then ramp up your tapping speed in the final stretch to pass other competitors and claim a better finish.
