Wizardry Summoner (Japan)

Released exclusively for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2001 by ASCII Entertainment, Wizardry Summoner (Japan) is a unique spin-off of the iconic hardcore Wizardry CRPG series, tailored specifically for Nintendo’s handheld console. As a Japan-only release, this title brought the franchise’s signature first-person dungeon crawling to portable audiences, blending classic Wizardry mechanics with an original monster summoning hook that sets it apart from other entries in the series. Players take on the role of a young summoner exploring a sprawling, monster-infested fantasy kingdom, tasked with uncovering the mystery behind a rising dark force threatening the land. Unlike mainline Wizardry titles that focus on pre-built adventuring parties, Wizardry Summoner centers on your ability to capture, train, and deploy captured monsters to fight alongside your character, adding a layer of strategic customization not seen in earlier series entries. The game leverages the GBA’s 16-bit hardware to del

Game Guide

Wizardry Summoner may be a more streamlined take on the classic Wizardry formula for GBA, but it still retains the franchise’s signature challenging difficulty, so these tips will help you survive your dungeon crawl. First, start by prioritizing your character’s stat allocation: as a summoner, your core stat is Magic, which boosts both your offensive spells and your capture success rate. Put at least 60% of your early stat points into Magic, with the rest split between HP and Speed to avoid getting one-shot by high-level dungeon enemies. The core mechanic of the game is monster capture: never attempt to capture a full-health monster. Weaken it to below 20% of its total HP before casting your capture spell, and this will boost your success rate to over 75%, compared to less than 20% for full-health targets. For dungeon exploration, always carry at least one healing item and a map scroll per run. Many of the deeper dungeons have randomly generated layouts, so a map scroll will prevent you from getting lost and wasting resources wandering in circles. Your party composition matters a lot too: always include at least one tanky physical monster and one healing monster in your active party. Early on, capture the giant wolf enemy found in the second dungeon—it has high HP and solid early damage that will carry you through the first third of the game. Don’t forget to regularly train your captured monsters: each monster gains XP alongside your main character, so rotating out low-level monsters occasionally will help you build a versatile roster for late-game boss fights. Remember to save often—Wizardry Summoner retains the classic series permadeath risk for your main character, and a single bad encounter can wipe hours of progress if you don’t save. After beating the main story, don’t miss the post-game hidden dungeon unlocked by talking to the elder in the starting town, which features rare high-level monsters and exclusive loot that makes extra exploration well worth it.
