Ultra Keibitai - Monster Attack (Japan)

Ultra Keibitai - Monster Attack is a Japan-exclusive action-strategy game released for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2001 by Bandai, based on the long-running Ultraman tokusatsu franchise. Designed specifically for Nintendo’s 32-bit handheld, the game blends tactical base management and real-time combat against giant rogue monsters that threaten Japan. As a new recruit of the Ultra Garrison (Keibitai), players are tasked with monitoring monster activity across multiple regions, responding to emergency alerts, and neutralizing threats before they destroy civilian infrastructure. Unlike many licensed Ultraman games of the era, this title balances strategic resource planning with fast-paced on-foot and vehicular combat, leveraging the GBA’s graphical capabilities to render large, detailed giant monster sprites that capture the scale of classic tokusatsu battles. As a Japan-only release, it gained a cult following among retro game collectors and GBA enthusiasts in later years, thanks to it

Game Guide

For new players jumping into Ultra Keibitai - Monster Attack, the most important first tip is to prioritize upgrading your regional radar systems early in your campaign. Most monster spawns are hidden initially, and a higher-level radar will alert you to monster activity much earlier, giving you time to deploy forces and gather resources before a monster reaches a populated area. For basic combat, remember that the A button fires your primary weapon, the B button triggers your equipped special weapon, and the L and R buttons let you quickly swap between different weapons and vehicles when you’re out in the field. Always aim for a monster’s visible weak points — most monsters take 2-3x more damage from hits to their head, back, or glowing energy organs, rather than generic body shots. Early in the game, avoid taking on S-class monster missions until you’ve unlocked at least the rocket launcher and medium armor, as early-game low-damage weapons will only drag out fights and increase the chance your base takes irreversible damage. Resource management is key: don’t spend all your credits on new weapons immediately — set aside at least 30% of your earnings after each mission to repair base defenses and stock up on healing items. When a giant boss monster appears and the screen flashes with an "Ultraman Arrival" alert, position your team outside of the crossfire of their special attacks, and focus on damaging the boss’s weak point while it’s stunned by Ultraman’s attacks. If you’re playing on emulator for this retro title, stick to the original GBA 60Hz refresh rate to keep combat timing accurate, and map the shoulder buttons to easily accessible keys for quick weapon swaps during intense battles.
