Super Mario Advance (USA) (Demo) (Kiosk)

Released by Nintendo in 2001 alongside the North American launch of the Game Boy Advance, Super Mario Advance (USA) (Demo) (Kiosk) is a rare promotional ROM built exclusively for in-store retail display kiosks. Designed to let potential GBA buyers test the handheld’s capabilities and the console’s flagship launch title, this kiosk demo is more than just a marketing asset—it’s a sought-after piece of Nintendo history for retro game collectors and long-time Mario fans. Unlike the full retail release of Super Mario Advance, which included a complete remaster of Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) plus a bonus trial of Mario Kart: Super Circuit, this kiosk demo offers a curated limited slice of gameplay to hook shoppers during in-store visits. It features the full first world of the remastered Super Mario Bros. 2, letting players try all four playable characters (Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad) to experience the GBA’s updated sprite work, improved stereo audio, and tight responsive controls.

Game Guide

If you’re new to this specific Super Mario Advance demo, use these tips to get the most out of your playthrough, whether you’re speedrunning the demo or exploring every hidden secret. First, remember this game is based on Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA), which plays very differently from the original 1985 Super Mario Bros. core mechanics, so take a moment to learn the core systems before you start. Pick your character based on your playstyle: Mario has perfectly balanced jumping, strength, and speed, making him the best choice for new players looking to beat the demo’s available content quickly. Luigi can jump much higher than any other character, which makes him ideal for reaching hidden high platforms and secret coin caches, though his movement is a bit slipperier to master. Princess Peach can slow her descent by floating in mid-air, making her perfect for crossing wide gaps without falling, while Toad is the fastest character at lifting and throwing objects, great for quickly clearing levels. The demo only includes World 1, so use these tips to 100% all available content: pull up every weed and dig up every dirt clump you see—most hide extra coins or even hidden 1-ups. Each level has five hidden red coins; collect all five to unlock a secret warp pipe that leads to a bonus area with extra lives and rare power-ups. To beat the World 1 end boss, wait for the boss to open its mouth, then throw a large vegetable directly into its open mouth to deal damage. Repeat this three times to defeat the boss and complete the demo’s full content. Keep in mind the original kiosk demo has a built-in 5-minute time limit for in-store trials, so if you want to explore longer, just reset the demo after your time runs out to keep playing.
