SpongeBob SquarePants - Revenge of the Flying Dutchman (USA) (Beta)

Released as a pre-production beta build for the North American market in 2002 by publisher THQ, SpongeBob SquarePants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman is a 2D action-adventure platformer built exclusively for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) handheld system. Based on the wildly popular Nickelodeon animated series of the same name, this beta version gives retro game fans a rare look at the game’s development before its full retail launch later that same year. Developed by Vicarious Visions, this beta preserves an early version of the beloved SpongeBob adventure, with small differences from the final release that make it a unique collectible for retro gaming enthusiasts. Players step into the iconic square pants of SpongeBob SquarePants, after accidentally releasing the ghostly Flying Dutchman from his cursed bottle while cleaning out the Krusty Krab. The vengeful ghost pirate steals the souls of SpongeBob’s closest friends Patrick Star and Squidward Tentacles, and plans to transform Bikini Bot

Game Guide

If you’re diving into this rare beta build of SpongeBob SquarePants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman for GBA, these tips will help you complete the adventure and discover all its hidden content. Start by mastering SpongeBob’s core movement early: your double jump is critical for reaching high platforms across every level, and you can reset your double jump by bouncing on jellyfish or stunned enemies, a trick that unlocks access to hidden areas holding extra gems and golden spatulas. Always prioritize collecting golden spatulas as you explore: unlike the final retail release, this beta build hides an exclusive bonus concept art gallery behind collecting all 15 hidden spatulas across the main levels, a perk that’s not available in the finished game. When fighting common enemies like ghost crabs and wild jellyfish, time your bubble attacks to stun opponents before jumping on their heads to defeat them. Avoid spamming bubble blasts, as this leaves you open to counterattacks that can drain your health quickly. When you reach the final boss fight against the Flying Dutchman on his haunted ship, start by dodging his projectile blasts by hiding between the deck crates. Once he lands to charge you, roll out of the way and hit his back with three well-timed bubble blasts to stun him. Repeat this process three times to defeat him. Note that this beta has a few common minor glitches: if you get stuck in a geometry after a cutscene, simply reload from your last checkpoint to fix the issue. Talk to every NPC you encounter: Sandy and Mr. Krabs will give you free health refills and clues about hidden gem locations, so never skip NPC interactions. Finally, complete the jellyfish catching mini-game in Jellyfish Fields early to unlock a permanent health upgrade that makes later ghost levels far easier to beat.
