First, master the core GBA controls: use the D-pad to move, A for primary fire, B to jump, and the L shoulder button to throw explosives. Always keep moving – standing still makes you an easy target for enemy snipers and long-range artillery, which is one of the most common mistakes new players make. The game’s unique card system is your biggest asset: every enemy has a chance to drop a unique card when defeated, and you can equip up to three cards at a time for permanent passive bonuses. Early in your playthrough, prioritize equipping cards that increase your maximum health and extend your weapon’s magazine size – these buffs make every encounter much easier, especially in the harder late-game levels. Look out for breakable walls and structures throughout every stage: almost every level has at least one hidden secret path that leads to rare cards, extra lives, and powerful secret weapons like the laser rifle or rocket launcher that make boss fights far more manageable. When you face a boss, always save your heavy ammo and explosives for its marked weak point – almost all bosses have a visible glowing core or cockpit that takes 2-3 times more damage than other armored parts. For example, the first stage’s giant armored train boss has a clear weak point on its front cannon, so focus all your fire there instead of wasting ammo on its protected sides. If you get access to a Metal Slug tank, don’t waste its health on low-level groups of regular soldiers. Save the tank’s durability and heavy firepower for the end-of-level boss, as its cannon will cut through a boss’s health bar much faster than your standard weapons.
