Kong - King of Atlantis (USA)

Released in 2005 for the Game Boy Advance by publisher THQ, Kong - King of Atlantis (USA) is a licensed action-platformer based on Cartoon Network’s popular Kong: The Animated Series, adapting the animated miniseries storyline of the same name for handheld audiences. The game follows protagonist Jason Jenkins, his grandmother Dr. Lorna Jenkins, and the giant mutated gorilla Kong as they travel to the mythic sunken city of Atlantis to stop the power-hungry villain Julius, who plans to steal the ancient city’s mystical energy to take over the world. Unlike many early 2000s licensed handheld games, Kong - King of Atlantis delivers solid, varied gameplay that leverages the GBA’s hardware well. Players can switch between two playable characters throughout the campaign: Jason, for tight platforming, puzzle solving, and exploration through narrow passages, and Kong, for high-powered combat against large enemies and destructive boss battles. The game features 14 distinct levels spanning jungle

Game Guide

Mastering Kong - King of Atlantis on GBA starts with learning how to use your two characters effectively, so always remember to switch often to match the situation. For exploration and platforming sections, stick with Jason: he can jump further, fit through small gaps, and use his grappling hook to swing across large chasms that Kong can never cross. When you encounter heavy barriers, large enemy mobs, or boss encounters, immediately swap to Kong, who can take far more damage and deal heavy damage with his punches and ground slams. A key pro tip: Kong’s health regenerates slowly when he’s not in combat, so if you take heavy damage during a fight, retreat back to a cleared section of the level and swap back to Jason for a minute while Kong recovers, saving you from wasting rare health pickups. When exploring every level, keep an eye out for hidden crumbling walls that hide secret rooms: these almost always contain rare Atlantean gems, which are required to unlock the game’s bonus concept art and challenge levels. For underwater sections as Jason, don’t rush through the currents: oxygen bubbles are placed strategically along the route, and extra bubbles are often hidden in side nooks if you’re running low on air. For boss battles, always dodge first before attacking: most bosses have a tell before their heavy attacks, so dodge out of the way, wait for them to get stunned after a missed attack, then strike with Kong. For the final boss battle against Julius, use the stone pillars around the arena to block his long-range energy blasts, only moving in to attack when he pauses to recharge his power. Finally, don’t forget to collect all health pickups after you hit a save point: save points come every three levels, and you’ll want full health going into the end-of-world boss encounter.
