King of Fighters EX The - NeoBlood (Japan) (Beta)

Released as an early Japanese beta build in 2001 for the Game Boy Advance (GBA), King of Fighters EX: Neo Blood marks SNK's first launch of its flagship fighting franchise on Nintendo's 32-bit handheld. Developed by Artoon under official license from SNK, this pre-retail Japanese beta gives retro game fans a rare, unfiltered look at the title's development process, featuring minor tweaks to character move sets, hitbox sizing, UI elements, and stage layouts that were changed before the full retail release. Staying true to core KOF tradition, the game retains the iconic 3-on-3 team battle format that made the franchise a global 90s fighting game staple. It features a roster of fan-favorite legacy characters including Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami, Terry Bogard, and Athena Asamiya, alongside original exclusive character Moe Habana created just for the EX sub-series. Unlike many early 2000s portable fighting games, this beta build retains the fast, combo-heavy gameplay that defines mainline KO

Game Guide

Before jumping into matches in this rare Japanese beta of King of Fighters EX: Neo Blood for GBA, take a minute to learn the adapted control layout first. The GBA's L and R shoulder buttons are mapped to quick defensive rolls and instant team swaps, so practice swapping mid-combo to reset pressure or escape corner traps, a mechanic that separates new players from pros in 3-on-3 KOF. For beginner-friendly team compositions, stick to a balanced setup: pair a close-range combo brawler like Kyo Kusanagi with a mid-range projectile specialist like Terry Bogard, and finish your team with a heavy-hitting closer like Iori Yagami to cover every combat scenario. Kyo's basic bread-and-butter combo (down-forward + light punch, into jumping heavy punch, into standing heavy punch) works flawlessly in this beta, and deals nearly 30% damage to a full-health opponent when landed correctly. A unique quirk of this beta build that most players don't know is that your EX super meter builds 15% faster when blocking attacks compared to the final retail version, so don't be afraid to block and bait aggressive opponents into overextending to build meter for powerful Desperation Moves. Desperation Move inputs are simplified on the GBA version: you can execute supers with a half-circle motion plus any punch button, instead of the more complex full motion from arcade KOF titles, making it much easier to land combo extensions into supers on the GBA's smaller d-pad. When facing rushdown opponents, use Athena's Psycho Ball projectile to keep them at distance, then tag in Iori for a quick cross-up mixup when they finally rush in. Always save your strongest, highest-damage character for last to take advantage of the beta's desperation mode mechanic, which doubles your attack output when your health drops below 25%, letting you turn around even the most lopsided matches.
