Mastering Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories on GBA starts with understanding its unique card-based combat system, which rewards strategic deck building over fast button mashing. Every card in your deck has a numerical value from 0 to 9: higher value cards win card duels, which let you land uninterrupted combos on enemies. 0-value cards can break any attack regardless of your opponent’s card value, but they lose to every other card if played after your opponent, so save them for devastating boss combos instead of wasting them on low-level regular enemies early in a floor. For early-game Sora deck builds, focus on stacking 3-7 value physical attack cards, with 2-3 magic cards and 1-2 healing item cards to keep you alive through tough fights. This balanced setup keeps your deck light, so you draw the cards you need more quickly during encounters. As you progress deeper into Castle Oblivion, add 2-3 more 0-value cards to your deck, especially before facing Organization XIII members, who regularly spam high-value combo attacks that can wipe out most of your health in one turn. When exploring each floor, always collect every open chest and clear optional challenge rooms before moving to the next world: the original Japanese release includes exclusive rare secret cards only unlocked by completing all optional challenges, and these premium cards boost your damage without adding extra weight to your deck. For the final boss fight against Marluxia, hold onto at least two 0-value cards to counter his multi-hit high-damage combos, and don’t be afraid to retreat to a rest room to rebuild your deck if you run low on healing cards. After completing Sora’s main story, unlock the exclusive Reverse Rebirth mode to play as Riku, which uses a completely different dark-focused card system. For Riku’s mode, stack high-value attack cards and activate his Dark Mode as soon as it’s available to boost your damage output and cut through tough enemies quickly.
