Initial D - Another Stage (Japan)

Released exclusively for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in Japan in 2001, Initial D - Another Stage is a street drifting racing game developed by TOSE and published by Banpresto, based on Shuichi Shigeno’s globally beloved manga and anime series Initial D. Staying true to the source material’s focus on underground mountain street racing, the game drops players into the iconic racing scene of Gunma Prefecture, where you can take on the role of series protagonist Takumi Fujiwara or Project D leader Ryosuke Takahashi, each with unique story campaigns aligned to the anime’s early arcs. Unlike many licensed racing games of the era, Initial D - Another Stage prioritizes realistic drift mechanics over raw speed, capturing the tense, skill-focused downhill racing that defines the franchise. Players can unlock and upgrade iconic cars from the series, including Takumi’s famous Toyota AE86 Sprinter Trueno, Ryosuke’s Mazda RX-7 FD3S, and Keisuke’s Mazda RX-7 FC3S, by winning races against rival teams

Game Guide

Mastering Initial D - Another Stage on GBA takes deliberate practice, since the game’s core challenge relies on precise drifting rather than holding full throttle through every turn. First, get comfortable with proper braking timing: always start braking before you enter a hairpin turn, especially on iconic downhill courses like Akina’s 8-twist. Tap the brake instead of holding it down to shift your car’s weight to the front axle, which makes initiating a smooth drift far easier. If you’re playing with manual transmission, downshift before entering a turn to keep your engine RPMs high, which gives you more power to exit the drift quickly without losing critical momentum. For new players, prioritize upgrading your tires and suspension before investing in extra engine power: better grip and handling will keep you from spinning out on tight turns, which is far more valuable than extra top speed on narrow mountain courses. When racing AI opponents, remember that most rival drivers will make consistent mistakes on the third and fifth hairpins on Akina, so use that opportunity to pass them on the inside of the turn. To unlock hidden cars and bonus story content, always select the “challenge” dialogue options when they pop up during story mode, as these unlock exclusive head-to-head races that reward rare, powerful vehicles. If you struggle with keeping your drift controlled, practice on the easier uphill Akina course first to get a feel for how your car responds to steering and throttle inputs before taking on more difficult downhill routes. Finally, don’t cut corners too sharply: hitting the guardrail will reset your speed almost completely, so it’s better to leave a small margin than risk a crash that costs you the entire race.
