Mastering Ice Age for GBA starts with learning to leverage the unique abilities of each playable character, which is the key to beating every level and unlocking all hidden content. By default, you can switch between Manny, Sid, and Diego at any time with the shoulder buttons, so don't forget to swap when you hit a roadblock. For heavy obstacles like boulders or blocked doorways, switch to Manny: he can push large objects by holding the interaction button, and his high health makes him ideal for facing off against large enemy predators. Diego is your go-to for challenging platforming sections: he runs faster and jumps much higher than the other two characters, making him perfect for crossing long gaps over melting ice or reaching distant high ledges. Sid, the often overlooked sloth, is essential for collecting hidden items: he can fit through narrow crevices and climb steep, slippery ice surfaces that the other characters can't navigate, so always send Sid in to explore small openings for secret collectibles. Each level contains 10 hidden ice shards; collecting all 10 shards across the full game unlocks exclusive bonus content, including original character concept art and a full theatrical trailer for the original Ice Age film, a bonus unique to the European multi-language release. For boss battles, like the climactic fight against rival smilodon leader Soto, wait for him to charge at you, then dodge behind a large boulder: Soto will hit the rock and stun himself, leaving him open for a charging attack from Manny. Repeat this process three times to defeat him. When playing on PLAYERETRO, you can customize your keyboard controls to match your preference, making it easier to switch characters quickly compared to the original GBA layout. Don't forget to save berry health pickups for boss battles instead of wasting them on minor damage early in levels.
