Famicom Mini 02 - Donkey Kong (Japan) (En)

Famicom Mini 02 - Donkey Kong is the second entry in Nintendo’s Japan-exclusive Famicom Mini re-release series for the Game Boy Advance, launched in 2004 by Nintendo. This specific English-language version brings the iconic 1981 original Donkey Kong arcade game to GBA handhelds, retaining every detail of the 1983 Famicom port that launched alongside Nintendo’s first home console. Developed and published by Nintendo, this re-release was created to celebrate Nintendo’s 125th anniversary, introducing a new generation of players to the game that kickstarted Nintendo’s dominance in the global video game industry. The game’s premise is simple but legendary: protagonist Jumpman (later renamed Mario for all future Mario franchise entries) must climb a multi-level construction site to rescue his girlfriend Pauline from the giant ape Donkey Kong, who escaped captivity and climbed to the top of the site to throw barrels and other obstacles at Jumpman. Game Guide

Mastering Famicom Mini 02 - Donkey Kong on GBA starts with understanding its simple but unforgiving core mechanics. For this port, you use the GBA D-pad to move left and right across girders, and the A button to jump. Unlike modern platformers, Jumpman’s jump is a fixed height and trajectory, so you cannot adjust your movement mid-jump, making precise timing your most important skill. On the first opening construction level, where Donkey Kong rolls barrels down toward you, the best tip is to avoid rushing up the ladders. Stick to the wider girders where you have more room to maneuver around bouncing barrels, and time your jumps to clear multiple barrels at once when they line up. The temporary hammer power-up that spawns on this level lets you break barrels for extra points, but you cannot jump while holding the hammer, so only grab it when your path to the next level is clear, and discard it by climbing a ladder once you’ve cleared the obstacles in your path. The second conveyor belt and elevator level requires patience: always check the direction of the moving conveyors, which will pull your character in their direction even if you aren’t pressing anything. Wait until elevators are perfectly aligned with the next girder before jumping, as a misaligned jump will send you falling and cost you a life. On the third pie stage, patrolling cement pies move along fixed routes every playthrough, so take your time to memorize their patterns after a few attempts to avoid getting cornered. The final rivet level, where you defeat Donkey Kong, tasks you with removing all eight rivets holding up his platform by jumping on each one. Work your way around the perimeter of the level instead of darting for the closest rivets first, to avoid getting trapped between Donkey Kong’s jumping and the stage edge. Since this GBA port does not include native save support, new players should practice each stage individually to memorize layouts before attempting a full run, and prioritize surviv
