Famicom Mini 01 - Super Mario Bros (Japan) (En) (Rev 1)

Famicom Mini 01 - Super Mario Bros (Japan) (En) (Rev 1) is a 2004 portable re-release of Nintendo’s genre-defining 1985 platformer, ported exclusively to the Game Boy Advance (GBA) as the inaugural entry in Nintendo’s Japan-only Famicom Mini collection. This specific revision features full English language support for international players, and fixes minor text alignment and display bugs present in early production runs of the cart. Developed and published by Nintendo, this port stays completely faithful to the original 1985 Famicom release of Super Mario Bros, retaining every original level layout, enemy pattern, pixel art detail, and iconic 8-bit soundtrack that revolutionized the home video game industry. This handheld release let retro fans and new players alike experience the original Super Mario Bros anywhere, long before the launch of official modern retro game libraries. Game Guide

If you’re new to this classic GBA port of the original Super Mario Bros, these core tips will help you beat Bowser and collect all possible extra lives. First, master the basic mechanics: the GBA A button jumps, B button lets you run and fire fireballs after picking up a Fire Flower, and Start pauses your game or opens the world select after clearing a full world. The most important trick for beginners is the running jump: hold B to build momentum before pressing A, and you’ll clear far wider gaps than a standing jump can manage. This is non-negotiable for crossing large chasms in World 8 and many bonus areas. For power-up strategy, always prioritize grabbing a Super Mushroom as soon as possible if you’re small Mario: getting hit as small Mario means instant death, but getting hit as Super Mario only shrinks you back to small, giving you a critical second chance. Save Fire Flowers for castles and Bowser fights, as they let you defeat most enemies from a distance, avoiding risky jumps onto moving enemies or platforms. Keep an eye out for hidden blocks: many extra lives and coin bonuses are hidden in empty space above regular blocks or near level exits. For example, a well-known hidden 1-up sits in World 1-1, just after the first pipe: jump at the top of the screen between the two blocks before the exit staircase to reveal it. For Bowser fights at the end of every world, you don’t need to defeat him with fireballs: if you’re unarmed, just time a run past his fire breath to reach the axe at the end of the bridge, and it will drop him into the lava instantly. To skip to later worlds quickly, use the classic warp zone trick: in World 1-2, climb on top of the exit pipe at the end of the level, walk right to find a hidden pipe that leads to a warp zone, letting you jump straight to World 2, 3, or 4. The warp zone in World 4-2 will even let you jump directly to World 8 to beat the game in just a few levels.
