Famicom Mini 26 - Famicom Mukashibanashi - Shin Onigashima - Zen Kouhen (Japan)

Famicom Mini 26 - Famicom Mukashibanashi - Shin Onigashima - Zen Kouhen is a 2004 exclusive Game Boy Advance (GBA) re-release developed and published by Nintendo, released only in Japan as the 26th entry in the fan-favorite Famicom Mini retro remake series. The original Shin Onigashima launched as two separate episodes for the Nintendo Famicom Disk System back in 1987, and this GBA compilation packages the full first (Zen) and second (Kouhen) chapters into a single portable cartridge for retro fans. Rooted in traditional Japanese folktales, the game follows two orphaned siblings, Itaku and Kamiku, whose village is left in ruin after powerful oni (demons) steal the life force of most of the townsfolk. The pair sets out on a perilous journey to defeat the oni and restore their home, meeting iconic folktale companions along the way. As a narrative-focused text adventure, the game prioritizes rich storytelling and puzzle-solving over fast-paced action, with charming original 8-bit pixel ar

Game Guide

As a story-driven text adventure, Shin Onigashima doesn’t require fast reflexes, but it does reward careful observation and planning. Use these tips to navigate your journey smoothly. First, master the basic GBA controls: press A to confirm dialogue choices and interact with items, press B to back out of menus and cancel your last selection, and open the in-game menu to check your key items and review your current progress. The most important rule is to read every line of dialogue closely: almost all puzzle clues are hidden in character conversations, and skipping text will almost always leave you stuck. Early in the game, always grab the village travel pass from the headman before heading to the oni’s mountain gate. Trying to enter without the pass will force you to walk all the way back to the village, wasting valuable time. As you progress, you’ll recruit three folktale companions: a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant. Each has a unique ability to overcome obstacles: the dog sniffs out hidden key items buried in the forest, the monkey climbs steep cliffs that are impossible to cross on foot, and the pheasant flies across deep chasms to unlock new paths. If you hit a roadblock, always check if you can use a companion’s ability to move forward. When you reach the final boss fight with the oni king, double-check that you have the sacred bell collected from the starting village shrine. Without this item, you cannot defeat the boss and will be locked out of the true ending. Finally, use the GBA version’s save feature frequently: save after every major story beat, since wrong dialogue choices can trigger bad endings that force you to replay long sections. If you don’t read Japanese, keep a translated walkthrough handy to avoid getting stuck on nuanced dialogue choices.
