Famicom Mini 20 - Ganbare Goemon! - Karakuri Douchuu (Japan)

Famicom Mini 20 - Ganbare Goemon! - Karakuri Douchuu is a 2004 Game Boy Advance exclusive retro re-release, published by Nintendo as part of Japan’s Famicom Mini line of classic Famicom ports. This title is a faithful handheld port of Konami’s original 1986 Famicom action-platformer, the very first entry in the beloved long-running Ganbare Goemon (Mystical Ninja) franchise that remains a cultural staple of Japanese retro gaming. Designed to honor the original experience, this GBA version retains every ounce of the original’s quirky humor, charming art style, and challenging platforming, optimized for smooth on-the-go play on the Game Boy Advance handheld. The game follows the adventures of Goemon, a quick-witted, pipe-wielding Edo-period ninja who sets out to stop the evil villain Bentenmaru, who has kidnapped local townsfolk and stolen valuable treasures across feudal Japan. The game’s title refers to the numerous mechanical (karakuri) contraptions scattered across every stage, from h

Game Guide

While Famicom Mini 20 - Ganbare Goemon! - Karakuri Douchuu is a straightforward retro platformer, a few key tips will help you beat every level and unlock all its hidden secrets. First, master Goemon’s core mechanics: your primary pipe attack can not only defeat enemies, but also let you bounce off enemy heads to reach higher platforms that are otherwise inaccessible. This trick is essential for reaching hidden coin caches and secret doors tucked away in the upper sections of most stages. Coins are the most valuable resource in the game, so collect every coin you encounter. You will need them to activate the signature karakuri contraptions scattered across every level. Most mechanical statues and devices require 10 coins to activate, and they can clear entire groups of enemies, open hidden paths to bonus areas, or deal massive damage to bosses, so save at least 20 coins at all times when entering a new level. For early stage progression: the opening forest levels are full of hidden rolling log traps that launch from tree trunks as you pass. Stay close to the lower half of the screen when moving through dense wooded areas to avoid taking unexpected damage, and pause for a split second after passing each tree to let any traps trigger before moving on. When you reach end-of-world castle bosses, their patterns are very simple: most bosses charge across the screen repeatedly, so just jump over their charge, land behind them, and hit them with your pipe three times to defeat them. If you collect 100 coins in every level of the first three worlds, you will unlock a hidden bonus world that includes an exclusive extra ending easter egg for long-time Goemon fans. Finally, take advantage of the GBA port’s built-in save functionality to save your progress anytime, so you do not have to beat the entire game in one sitting.
