DK - King of Swing (USA Australia)

Released in 2005 by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance, DK: King of Swing brings a fresh, unique twist to the iconic Donkey Kong franchise, deviating from the series’ classic side-scrolling platformer roots to deliver a creative climbing-based action experience. Developed by Japanese studio Paon, this official North American and Australian release marked a bold experiment for Donkey Kong, designed specifically to take advantage of the GBA’s portable form factor and accessible two-button control scheme. The story centers on Donkey Kong’s quest to reclaim his stolen Banana Hoard and the mythic Crystal Coconut, both stolen by the mischievous King K. Rool, who interrupted the annual Jungle Jam climbing tournament to pull off his heist. Unlike traditional Donkey Kong outings, players do not jump or run across static platforms; instead, they control Donkey Kong by alternating grip with his two hands to climb, swing, and traverse a series of vertically oriented, obstacle-filled levels. Game Guide

Mastering the core grip mechanic is the first and most important step to conquering DK: King of Swing. Each of the GBA’s shoulder buttons controls one of Donkey Kong’s hands: L for the left hand, R for the right hand. You will need to alternate pressing and releasing these buttons to move up, down, and across the pegs scattered across every level. A common mistake new players make is holding both buttons at once for too long; instead, learn to release one grip while holding the other to swing Donkey Kong’s body to reach distant, out-of-reach pegs. Build momentum by swinging back and forth a few times before launching DK toward a distant target, this simple trick will save you from countless falls into bottomless pits or hazardous jungle water. For basic enemy encounters, most standard Kremlings and foes can be defeated by launching DK into them mid-swing, so time your attack carefully when an enemy crosses your swing path. When facing the game’s boss battles against elite Kremlings and the final boss King K. Rool, focus first on memorizing their attack patterns. Each boss has a clear movement pattern that leaves a small opening for you to strike; for example, King K. Rool will often leave an exposed peg near his body after a charging attack, so swing into him quickly to deal damage before he resets his position. Collect as many bananas as you can while traversing each level: 100 bananas earn you an extra life, and hidden bunches of bananas often point the way to secret areas with bonus rewards. If you are playing the competitive multiplayer Jungle Jam mode, use the bump mechanic to knock opponents off the course. Build up a large swing and collide with other players to send them falling, turning the tide of a race at the very last second. For harder late-game levels with moving pegs, wait for the peg to align with your next target before releasing your grip; rushing will almost always lead to a costly fall. Don’t forget to explore every nook of each level: many stag
