To get the most out of your Castleween playthrough on GBA, start by mastering the protagonist swap mechanic, as it is required for almost every puzzle and challenge in the game. Always match your character to the task at hand: when you need to clear long bottomless gaps or outrun moving spike traps, swap to Alec, his superior speed and jump height will keep you from falling or taking unnecessary damage. When you encounter heavy obstacles that need to be moved to reach higher ledges or activate hidden switches, swap to Kate, as Alec cannot move the game’s heavier puzzle objects. Collect every piece of scattered candy you see across each level: earning 100 candy pieces grants you an extra life, which is critical for surviving the harder late-game castle levels and challenging boss encounters. For the game’s first major boss, the Skeleton Gatekeeper, remember to dodge his sweeping bone attack by jumping over it, then use Kate to throw the small bone projectiles he drops back at him; three direct hits will take him down quickly. Don’t ignore the golden jack-o’-lantern tokens hidden in every level: collecting all tokens in a world unlocks a secret bonus level filled with extra candy and lives that make late-game progress much easier. The most common puzzle type in Castleween requires pairing both characters: use Kate to push a block to a high ledge, swap to Alec to jump on top of the block, then have Alec activate a distant switch that opens a door for both characters. If you’re playing on an emulator or custom handheld, map the character swap button to a shoulder button for easier access, as you will be swapping constantly throughout your playthrough.
