Mastering Back Track on GBA starts with getting comfortable with its unique control scheme, which is unlike most other GBA shooters of the era. The game uses the D-pad to move your character forward, backward, and turn left or right, while the L and R shoulder buttons are mapped to strafing left and right—learning to use these shoulder buttons constantly is the single most important tip for surviving harder levels. Strafing allows you to dodge enemy fire while keeping your crosshair locked on target, which is critical for taking out fast-moving enemies without taking unnecessary damage. Resource management is another key to success in Back Track. Ammo for heavy weapons like the rocket launcher and plasma rifle is extremely limited across most levels, so avoid wasting these rounds on weak basic enemies. Stick to your starting pistol for grunts and small creatures, and save your heavy ammo for mid-level mini-bosses and end-of-level boss fights. Health is also scarce, so always explore every side corridor and hidden alcove in every level—most levels hide at least one extra health pack off the main path, which can be the difference between beating a boss and restarting the entire level. Back Track does not support mid-level saves, so you’ll need to complete each full level in one sitting, so don’t rush into encounters without prepping. When it comes to boss fights, every boss has a predictable pattern you can exploit. Early jungle bosses rely on straight-line charges, so strafe sideways to avoid the attack then target their exposed back weakpoint for massive damage. For the final fight against Dr. Helios, never stop moving—his large area-of-effect energy blasts will one-shot you if you stay in one place, so keep strafing around the arena and fire rockets at his glowing core only when it’s exposed. If you’re new to first-person shooters on handhelds, start on the easiest difficulty setting to learn the movement and level layout before stepping up to normal or hard mode.
